And so the Malaysian National Space Agency (MNSA) and its Department of Islamic Development held a two-day conference in April last year. They invited 150 scholars, scientists, and astronauts to discuss "Islam and Life in Space." The result is a recently published booklet of guidelines for the faithful Muslim astronaut.
Five times a day (before sunrise, at midday, in late afternoon, after sunset, and at night), earth-bound muezzins call Muslims to prayer. A spaceship traveling 17,400 miles per hour orbits the earth 16 times in a day. Does that mean praying 80 times in 24 hours?
The guidelines are much more reasonable: Daily prayer in space is not linked to sunrises and sunsets, but to a 24-hour cycle based on the "home" time zone of Baikonur, the Russian-leased launch site in Kazakhstan. Five meditations every 24 hours will suffice.
If interrupting work to pray is not possible, the astronaut may practice a shorter version of the prayer or combine midday and afternoon prayer times, or the evening and night ones.
The next problem: Where is Mecca?
Muslims on Earth face Mecca, in central Saudi Arabia, when they pray. The MNSA suggests that the astronaut pray toward Mecca as much as possible, or at the Earth in general. But if it becomes necessary, the astronaut may simply face any direction.
The attitude while at prayer is also an issue. In zero gravity, the sequence of the praying postures – standing, bowing, kneeling, and prostrating oneself – is difficult at best. Malaysian Islamic authorities say the astronaut should stand, preferably. If he can't stand, he should sit. If he can't sit, he should lie down. And if he can't do any of those, he's allowed to symbolically indicate the postures "with his eyelids" or to simply imagine them, according to the MNSA booklet.
Before worship, a Muslim must perform ritual washing – cleaning face, hands, arms, feet, and hair. The problem: Water on the ISS is so precious that even sweat and urine are recycled. And so the Muslim astronaut is permitted "dry ablution." In desert areas on earth, Muslims use dirt and sand to clean the hands. The astronaut will strike his palms on a wall or mirror – though this is not likely to raise any dust.

总结了下，黑客通过MSN给Google中国一位员工发了一个链接，员工打开了，被挂了马。（估计又是用IE的家伙），然后Google的内网被渗透。Google Gaia是个Single Sign-On系统，黑客有可能在里面搞了个后门，这样应该盗取的是cookie或者token。可以用来登录任意Gmail。数据中转租用的是Rackspace。

The unprecedented growth of the Internet has given rise to the Dark Web, the problematic facet of the Web associated with cybercrime, hate, and extremism. Despite the need for tools to collect and analyze Dark Web forums, the covert nature of this part of the Internet makes traditional Web crawling techniques insufficient for capturing such content. In this study, we propose a novel crawling system designed to collect Dark Web forum content. The system uses a human-assisted accessibility approach to gain access to Dark Web forums. Several URL ordering features and techniques enable efficient extraction of forum postings. The system also includes an incremental crawler coupled with a recall-improvement mechanism intended to facilitate enhanced retrieval and updating of collected content. Experiments conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the human-assisted accessibility approach and the recall-improvement-based, incremental-update procedure yielded favorable results. The human-assisted approach significantly improved access to Dark Web forums while the incremental crawler with recall improvement also outperformed standard periodic- and incremental-update approaches. Using the system, we were able to collect over 100 Dark Web forums from three regions. A case study encompassing link and content analysis of collected forums was used to illustrate the value and importance of gathering and analyzing content from such online communities.

The idea of “WebKit2” can be a little confusing since WebKit is something of an overloaded name. It is used by various people to refer to the WebKit API layer that the WebKit framework provides on Mac OS X, the WebKit project as a whole, and to nightly builds of WebKit used with Safari. “WebKit2” is a replacement for the API layer of WebKit that’s designed with multi-process and multi-threaded clients in mind.
The API layer of WebKit sits on top of the cross-platform WebCore codebase. To date it has consisted of platform-specific code that implements the WebKit APIs (Objective-C API on Mac, COM on Windows, etc) and some amount of platform behavior. Very little code at that level is currently shared between platforms. The new API layer intends to push as much of the platform behavior as possible down in to WebCore, to provide a cross-platform core that abstracts the multi-process / multi-thread model (where web content lives in a separate process or thread from the client application), and to provide a cross-platform API on which the platform-specific APIs can be built.

很早就说过，计算机科学（特别是互联网和Web）其实和社会科学（特别是政治）其实是邻居。

最近有两个事情从一些很微妙的地方和政治还真有可类比之处：

1. iPhone OS 4.0 SDK ToS Sec. 3.3.1章节霸王条款问题。
2. reddit新的spam过滤机制

第一个问题，各大社区都吵翻天了。4.0新版SDK的ToS这样说的：

3.3.1 — Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited).

首先咱们给这玩意儿定个性：这是一个完全无视任何技术和发展，纯粹的政治决定。因为Apple大爷有这个权利在ToS里提出这个要求和法律。

在IT工业从PC升级到mobile过程中，Apple可谓处处抢占了先机。Apple作出这个决定其实跟当年微软把user和dev捆绑到 Win32 API 上是同一个性质的决定。但是别人微软至少还是一个基于Wintel松散的open体系，Vista的失败很大一部份原因就是因为微软斗不过DoJ的官司。但是微软跟Apple的垄断相比，真的是小巫见大巫了。Apple是从最上游的硬件到最下游的软件一口气垄断完了。从理论上来说，这个新ToS不仅宣判了Flash, Java, appcelerator, MonoTouch, Unity3D的死刑，甚至宣判了objective-j, GLSL 和 GWT 的死刑。这也是rms和自由软件运动一直批判的proprietary software可恶的地方。

而这一切，都把人们的注意力从技术的进步和发展，拉入了政治斗争的泥潭。

第二个问题，我们不谈reddit本身spam问题是怎么怎么样的。我只是觉得reddit博客里有一点描述很有意思：

• In the earliest days, there was no spam.
• Then, there was some spam, but users would downvote it right away.
• Then, the New queue was so flooded with spam that it became unreadable, which ultimately starved the front page of good submissions. So we (the admins) started removing it manually.
• Then we asked you guys to report spam so we at least didn't have to go looking for it.
• Then, even sorting through the reports got overwhelming, and we had to turn the job over to moderators.
• Then, the moderators were overwhelmed and an automated spam filter had to be set up for each reddit community.
• Then, traffic grew so much that the spam filter's tiny false positive rate started accumulating into a constant stream of stories about poor souls who were unfairly blocked. Most redditors are understandably sympathetic to these stories, and so there have been numerous prominent submissions that inevitably end with us being accused of censorship -- or at best, being a police state. And that makes us feel terrible.

恩。一个社区的发展，不仅有技术上scalabiilty的问题，更大更致命的问题是权利上scalability的问题。看到reddit社区admin和mod之间隐蔽的裂痕，我第一个想到的就是中国古代宫廷里，皇帝和臣子权利拉锯和政治斗争。政治和人类sociology是一门很复杂的学问，地球上最聪明的中国人，花了几千年的时间来探索，也很难找到一个平衡。我觉得这里面最有趣的一点就是，技术人员解决社会问题就像解决软件工程问题一样，如果遇到一个没法解决的事情，就通过增加一个中间层来解决。而其实mod这个中间层就像一个摔断的磁铁，N-S其实是相斥的。mod其实是背着admin向着user的。所以mod其实拉远了admin和user之间的距离。如果遇到素质和觉悟不高的mod，很有可能就造成社区的分崩离析和衰亡。

reddit前一段时间还有个闹得满城风雨的mod。id叫Saydrah。这也是一个社区兴衰史的一个小浪花和小插曲吧。一个网站，社区的死亡比技术的死亡更加致命。

大型强子对撞机开始发表物理论文: 作者人数成灾

近日欧洲物理学会专业期刊Phys. Lett. B以最快的审稿、编辑和出版速度发表了大型强子对撞机ATLAS合作组的首个物理成果。在这篇22页 的论文中，从标题到参考文献只占了10页，其他12页用于书写上千位作者和他们的单位，看起来十分滑稽。

ATLAS合作组三千位物理学家（包括学生）悉数挂名，按姓氏字母顺序排列。第一单位即第一作者的单位。第一单位是University at Albany，美国一个名不见经传的学校。第一作者为G. Aad，并排两个A，谁能排他前面啊？

这个prezi超赞的。什么是非线性ppt？就是说一个演示文稿不是按照 上一张/下一张 没有层次感的线性排列依次出现，而是通过zoom in zoom out加以动画这种极具创新的方式来浏览内容。

这样做出来的ppt逻辑结构非常清晰。浏览，导航和定位方便到极致了。

就上面那个例子来说，很容易看出来作者讲问题的三个步骤。引言，为什么，怎么办。每一个大话题的五个关键点也很展示得很清楚。

最后revise起来也超方便

如果能够搜索文本和富文本，甚至公式那就绝对无敌了。不过这种非线性层次结构的ppt已经有个好处了，就是定位特方便。以前书本学习的时候要寻找记忆中的一个位置需要通过章节和目录，甚至索引定位，现在直接通过逻辑关系就可以定位了。

希望这种非线性的ppt/keynote/slides/presentation多起来。学习效率高不说，顺手多了。

我觉得这才是真正数字革命的东西。ppt之类只是把老式幻灯机改造成了数字投影仪播放，但是实质形式没有改变。这种可以自由zoom in/out的展示方式才是所有传统手段不能企及的平台。

就这个《Math is not linear》本身也很有意思。周长和面积相等的长方形有几种？这一个问题就可以把代数和几何联系起来；比0大，但是又比所有正实数小的数存在吗？这就引入了超实数和非标准分析。太赞了。我也反思过以前在学校的日子，我觉得最浪费生命的事情就是学习了太多庸才写的教材。

起初还以为iPad能成为tablet杀手，结果看到篇文章File Sharing with an iPad: Ugh!囧了。

1. iWorks没有保存按钮，30秒自动保存一次。后果就是，你不能另存为，所以很容易你后面的东西把前面的成果覆盖了，然后撤销次数有限。
2. iPad和Mac之间传文件非常麻烦。甚至需要通过 iwork.com 服务器中转
3. 一次只能导出一个文档，不支持批量导出
4. 从Mac传文件到iPad，需要启动废品iTunes。机器要卡那么几秒
5. iPad不支持打印

• t61是听 indie 最好的地方
• Spotify是王者。但是限制使用地区。从音质、功能、数量、更新、客户端上来说都是无可挑剔的精品
• Pandora和Last.FM没落了。属于legacy服务了。
• grooveshark是上面两个的很好的替代品。有一对黄金组合是 Pitchfork + Hype Machine + Grooveshark = music discovery heaven

这里有一点非常值得注意，那就是由于牛逼的spotify，iTunes在欧洲已经岌岌可危了。如果Spotify开放北美市场，那么iTunes真的是遇到一个非常厉害的对手。

Chrome对Flash这类外部程序插件是通过NPAPI实现的，NPAPI有个缺点就是要调用外部组件必须注册一个MIME。我对Windows里MIME机制还不熟悉，不知道可不可以不通过dll而直接通过修改注册表实现。迅雷官方的Firefox插件就是通过ThunderComponent.dll+thunder.xpi实现的，可惜这个是XPCOM Only，CyberArticle推出的KB系统，WizKnowledge在Chrome里的调用，也是通过注册一个application/x-wizbrother-wizknowledge-ax的MIME实现的。

不过Chrome更加牛逼的是还支持ActiveX的。启动chrome.exe的时候加一个--enable-all-activex 就可以了。原理是通过一个叫ActiveX Shim的东东实现的。不过似乎后面把这个ActiveX Shim写死成只支持Windows Media Player的CLSID了。。。。所以这条路估计不太好走。

ActiveX Shim这玩意儿现在还不是很完善，用网银的时候界面能显示出来，但是招行的网银登录界面显示ATL error。可能还不完善吧。但是普通调用例如Windows Media Player是绝对没问题的。我估计调用thunderagent那个COM+组件也没多大问题。

最近Chromium更是增加了右键菜单的api

所以，我很乐观的估计很快支持迅雷右键下载的扩展会很快出现。

如果没人做的话，等哪天有时间了来折腾一下这个玩意儿 XD

另外两则关于Chrome的新闻，一是集成Flash插件，这个要表扬一下Google，因为无论HTML5 vs Flash的口水战，实用主义至上，对用户来说永远都是一件好事。而且这个集成的主要优点是Flash通过Chrome一起升级。避免了麻烦和讨厌的Adobe Updater；

另一个新闻是Chrome将支持更多同步内容。这个功能是相当口水的。如果能自动同步快速启动面板和cookie就太爽了。想象一下你只需要记住一个gmail密码，无论在哪里上网，都直接免登录直接用老cookie。太爽了。而且可以看到chrome.exe还支持一个 --sync-url 参数，估计以后可以自己架一个同步服务器。这样就避免了隐私泄漏给Google的麻烦。

其实Chrome的同步是libjingle做的，号称p2p。我希望Google能给这个p2p开放一个javascript的API，那么Chrome将成为翻墙和文件共享的神器！
